GIMMEL TAMUZ GATHERING AT CHABAD HOUSE

Chabad House will host its annual gathering for the day of Gimmel Tammuz, the third day in the Hebrew month of Tammuz. This day marks the event in 1994, when a funeral was held for the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, known to world Jewry simply as the Rebbe.

Upon the passing of the Previous Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneerson in 1950, the Rebbe himself instructed his followers not to get swayed by what appeared to have happened, and on the contrary, the Previous Rebbe remains the leader of the generation. Whatever the Previous Rebbe had instructed remains intact, and must be increased upon. This same instruction is held by many of the followers of the Seventh Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson. He continues to be the leader of world Jewry, and continues to maintain his status as the likely one to become the Messiah, the long awaited Redeemer of mankind from the present, largely spiritual, exile. Many rabbinical authorities ruled on the Rebbe’s status as the Messiah prior to 1994 and affirmed the ruling afterwards.

The day is marked with reflections on the Rebbe’s vision of a better, and ultimately perfect, world, and rededicating ourselves to participation in this process. This perfection will be achieved, through our efforts while yet in exile, in the times of the Messiah.

It also marks the day when the previous Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Joseph Isaac Schneerson, had his death sentence commuted to exile, in the former Soviet Union in 1927. He was imprisoned and sentenced because of his Jewish leadership and activism under the Communist regime. On the third of Tamuz, his sentence was commuted to three years of exile, and then shortly afterwards it was further commuted, and he was released completely. A number of months later he left Russia for Latvia, moving to Poland, and eventually arriving at the shores of the USA in 1940, having escaped the Nazi occupation in 1939.

The gathering will take place on Tuesday, June 22 at 8:30 pm at Chabad House. For more information please call Chabad at 549-2008 or see us online at chabadhouseatamherst.org.. Refreshments will be served.
